The Sonru Blog

To define or not to define, that is the question?

We (Sonru) have been trying to think of a catchy word for an automated video interview that can be a noun, a verb and its derivatives. It has been something of a pet project for our marketing manager, who believes that in order for something to become standard it must be defined and if we define it, and it takes then it'll become a standard word in the recruitment lexicon similar to CV. Automated interviews are completely new, there are only a handful of players in the market, few to speak of in Europe but we believe that automated video interviews will become the standard. Completing an automated video interview in the months and years to come will be as natural to us as hitting 'send' on that online application form or building our profiles on professional social networks such as LinkedIn. So what do you think of this?

Aview

Pronunciation:/?avju?/

noun

an automated online video interview completed by candidates (using a webcam and computer at a location of their choice) who read and record their responses to specific questions within a given deadline. It’s not a live interview so the candidates don’t have to be online the same time as the interviewer. E.g. We are pleased to inform you that you have reached the next stage of our recruitment process and would like to invite you to complete an aview.

• an automated online video interview of an applicant for a job, college admission, market research, etc.

verb [ trans. ] (often be aviewed)

hold an aview with (someone) : the HR director invited her to an aview

• question (someone) to discover their opinions or experience : in a survey more than half the respondents aviewed hated the label “mental illness.”

• orally examine (an applicant for a job, college admission, etc.) : he was aviewed for a top job | [ intrans. ] I was aviewing all last week.

• [ intrans. ] perform (well or badly) at an aview.

DERIVATIVES

aviewee 'avju:'i  noun

aviewer ?avju?r noun

Origin:

Coined by Irish video technology company, Sonru, to describe their flagship product – the automated video interview tool.
