Video CVs / Video Resumes - Generation Y or a General NO?

At Sonru, as online video interviewing innovators, we're often asked to comment on Video CVs or Video Resumes (as they're known in the USA) and our predictions or forecasts about the future of the Video CV. Video CVs  have been around for a long time now but have yet to take off and probably won't as they don't offer much added value over the normal CV. Let's go through this in more detail.

Why Sonru isn't a Video CV / Video Resume database?

Ed founded Sonru in 2007 with the aim of building a database of video CVs that could be offered to companies with the promise of being able to see the candidate before meeting face-to-face but extensive industry research changed our focus to building an application that would automate the first round interview using video. What did the market say?

  • Video CVs are rehearsed so you don't get a real feel for the candidate
  • Video CVs lack structure - the candidate might think it better to focus in on their sporting achievements rather than their actual skills
  • Video CVs lack uniformity - no one Video CV will be the same, so you'll be comparing apples with oranges.

A uniform, structured and standardised recruitment process is essential in early stage screening. It's the fairest way for candidates and it's the most efficient and effective way for recruiters/hiring managers. Today screening efficiency is even more relevant as recruiters/hiring managers face literally mountains of CVs, ref recent blog post on Google receiveing 75,000 applications in one week.

In saying that, there is definitely room for video in the recruitment process.
