Sonru can be incorporated into many activities in the LCVP modules. By incorporating the use of Sonru for Schools into the completion of required activities, students will also fulfil the requirement to demonstrate the use of ICT in their activities, as well as having an enriching and relevant learning experience.

Part 1 of this summary introduces the online video diary which can be used as means of monitoring and recording student progress. While part 2 takes a closer look at how the student/teacher can benefit from the use of Sonru in modules 1 and 2.

Part 1 Online Video Diary

With Sonru it is possible for the student to keep an online video diary. The online video diary can be used in any module or unit and is particularly useful as a means of:

  1. Allowing the student to monitor personal development.

  2. A clear means of allowing the student to establish goals monitor progress in achieving these goals and ascertain if he/she has succeeded in meeting these goals when the process is complete.

  3. An excellent way for the teacher to review student’s progress, without having to spend a lot of class time in discussion with the student. An email review message can be sent at the end of the process.

  4. This is a very thorough and effective means of making the student reflect upon their work. As videos are stored securely the student can easily reflect on an entire year’s learning and progress.

  5. Effective resource from which students can draw up reports of learning.

  6. Excellent means of allowing the student to reflect upon what they are studying, why they are studying it and how it can be of benefit. It also forces the student to establish and reflect upon their strengths and weaknesses.

Below is a suggested timeline of when video interviews can take place to create the video diary.

  1. At the beginning of each Module and/or unit the teacher will discuss with the class the general goals and objectives.
  2. After this discussion the teacher will send the students an interview. This first interview will prompt the student to outline their understanding of the work to be carried out in the module and their learning goals and objectives for the module.
  3. Teacher creates short generic interview which can be sent out on a weekly basis. The purpose of this interview is to prompt the student to describe work completed and monitor how goals are being achieved. The teacher can easily send the same interview to the class every week with questions like:

What tasks did you complete this week?

Name 5 things you learned this week?

What was your favourite and least favourite activity?

Did you meet any goals objectives?

Do you feel you discovered any new skills that you may have?

  4. Once the unit Module is complete the teacher will request that the student reviews all previous interviews before going on to complete one final interview.
  5. This interview will prompt the student to think about and impart their views on what was learned, were learning goals and objectives met, how they feel they have developed as a student, have they discovered any previously unknown aptitudes or interests.
  6. These files can be viewed at any time as part of student/teacher reflection.

Part 2 Link Modules

Link module 1 Preparation for the world of work

Please see career guidance-investigation and interview preparation-work experience for an in depth view of how the teacher/guidance counsellor can improve the teaching and learning experience in link module 1.

Link Module 2 Enterprise education

Within this module Sonru can be used to interview a local entrepreneur or business person, without the hassle of organising a meeting. The teacher can simply show the completed interview to the class at any time which is suitable.

Suggestion Each member of the class can contribute questions and the top 10 can be chosen by the teacher and used in the interview.

It’s easy for the teacher to create and send the interview while the entrepreneur does not have to take time out of work to visit the class. The interview will allow the class to:

Optional Items

Recorded Interview

The recorded interview can now be completed in a much cheaper and convenient method using Sonru. The students prepared questions can be passed to the teacher who will create the interview. The student can complete the interview at any time he/she wishes in the classroom environment or at home out of school hours. Using Sonru will also eliminate the cost and hassle of setting up and using expensive recording equipment. The teacher can easily add examiners as viewers to the interview.

Diary of work experience

As outlined in Part 1 online video diary the student can create an online video diary or report of the work experience. The student can use these saved video files to draw up the written diary of work experience. Below is a suggested framework for creating the online video diary.

  1. Before work experience

  2. Interview in which Student record goals and expectations for the experience.

  3. Whilst undertaking work experience
Student records and Reflect upon each days experience. Teacher can use the same generic interview each day. Examples of questions that can be used include:

    • Did you improve or learn any new practical personal or interpersonal skills?
    • Did you encounter any personal or work related challenges?
  4. Post experience

    • Post experience interview to examine student development as a direct result of the experience, this also allows for student reflection on experience.

    • Recorded videos used for teacher and student reflection on the achievement of goals set out before experience.

    • Recorded videos used as a reference point for teacher/student reporting on the experience

    • Recorded videos used as a reference point when creating future goals and objectives.
